Find Your Voice & Style
1. Experiment and establish a routine
Try to maintain a consistent flow of artwork. Experiment with an art journal, sketch, work on roughs and document ideas, techniques or concepts that you would like to explore. Such a journal might become your greatest treasure… Make it a priority and commit yourself!
2. Inspiration can come from anywhere
Many young artists usually turn to other visual artists' work for inspiration while they can get inspired with practically anything. One can get inspired through his or her day-to-day objects, thoughts, feelings or circumstances which will result in new and original ideas.
3. Create an inspiration board
Try to Create your own collection of things/subject-matter including colors, textures, words, music bands, random elements that might tease your inspiration and talent. This would allow you to discover patterns, ideas and styles in a visual and tangible form.
4. Put yourself through periods of "incubation"
One of steps that I took personally is to take time very now and then to limit the visual distractions (noise) that we are exposing ourselves to focus on enhancing a concept that I am exploring. Or take time to learn a new technique and try to make develop it and take it even further to make it my own.
5. Go to the Basics
Make sure that you refresh your basics every now and then. Going back to the basics which we might feel like we don’t need has many positives. It will sharpen your ability to re-evaluate your own work, introduce some of these basic concepts back to your work or even open a new door towards a new line or collection.
