How to choose your frame?

At the early stages of my journey as an artist, I found framing one of the most challenging decisions that I can make.  And it really took time until I started to feel confident with the choices I am making.

Here are some of the tips that might help you make the right decision while framing your artwork:

1.       Do you really have to frame it?

That is the first question one need to ask him/herself.  If the painting was on canvas or have any other sturdy platform, framing might not be needed. Do make sure that the artwork has the right depth and shape to sit on the wall. Having said that, the same piece might be used at a later stage to protect the edges of the art piece.

In other words, take you time and trust your taste.

2.       The Painting vs. the Frame

Make sure while choosing the frame that you are not creating a fierce visual competition between the artwork and the frame. The simpler the frame the better and remember its should complement the artwork not compete with it.

3.       It all depends on the medium

The medium used and whether its on canvas, paper …etc and how delicate is the surface makes a huge difference in the decision you make.  Some the surfaces need to be protected and preserved.  Even your choice of glass might also be affected by the surrounding environment.  The artwork might need at times sealed environment, humidity might make you add ‘Artsorb’ in the framing process, and you might also opt for using UV protected glass or low reflective glass.

4.       Color, Color, Color!

It all depends on the wall you are planning to hang the art piece on.  Having said that, there are thinks that you can keep in mind: Black might add a much-needed drama to the artwork, while white works well with colored and white walls.

5.       Go Unconventional

Stay away from conventional framing and experiment.
